Here are 6 troubleshooting tips that could help fix your issue or give your tech a head start on diagnostics

Check Your Thermostat

Make sure your thermostat is set to “Cool” and not “Fan” or “Heat.” If the screen is blank or flickering, try replacing the batteries. Also, confirm that the temperature is set at least 3 to 5 degrees lower than the current room temperature so the system knows to turn on.

Check the Circuit Breaker

If your AC isn’t turning on at all, it may have tripped the circuit breaker. Head to your electrical panel and make sure the breakers labeled for your AC and furnace are in the ON position. Flip them off and back on if needed.

Make Sure the Outdoor Unit Has Power

Step outside and take a look at the AC condenser unit. If it’s completely silent, it might not be getting power. Check the disconnect box near the unit to ensure it hasn’t been shut off accidentally.

Check for Ice Buildup

If you notice ice forming on the refrigerant lines or coils, turn off your AC right away and switch the thermostat to “Fan Only.” Let it run for one to two hours to defrost. Avoid using the AC again until a technician inspects it—running it frozen can cause damage.

Is Air Coming Out of the Vents?

If no air is blowing at all, your system may have a failed blower motor or capacitor. If warm air is coming out, it could mean your refrigerant is low or the compressor is failing. Either way, it’s a sign that professional service is needed.

Listen for Unusual Noises

If your system is making strange sounds like buzzing, grinding, clicking, or rattling, it could be a warning sign of electrical problems or loose components. Shut the system off to avoid further damage and wait for a technician to inspect it.
